Learning violin as an adult

A violin journey By Angela Brown

Becoming a violin master at age 30 with no prior training. I want to prove that I can go from beginner to mastery as an adult

Introduction

At the age of 30, while many people are settling into long-term careers, I set out to become a violin master, despite having no prior experience on the instrument. It was a challenge I had wanted to undertake for some time, and I am determined to overcome the challenges with creativity, hard work, and dedication. In this blog, I will outline the unique challenges I faced and the methods I used to overcome those challenges to become a violin master, including the strategies for learning the instrument, the techniques for mastering its nuances, and my eventual success.

Challenges of Starting from Scratch

As a beginner, I faced a unique set of challenges that are often not encountered by those who learn an instrument as a child. The most obvious of these was that I had no foundation on which to build. At the same time, I realized that I had the opportunity to construct my own approach to playing the violin by taking into account my existing musical knowledge and my individual strengths and weaknesses.

Developing a Strategy

The first step in overcoming the challenges associated with becoming a violin master at age 30 was to plan out my strategy. With this in mind, I decided that my primary goal was to gain competency in the instrument by working through the basics as quickly and efficiently as I could. I also decided that to avoid burnout I would focus on quality, not quantity, and would practice consistently, but not excessively.

Learning the Basics

My strategy for learning the instrument focused on understanding the basics and then gradually building on that foundation. To gain the necessary skills and knowledge, I began by taking lessons from an experienced violinist. During my lessons, I was not just taught technique, but also the physical mechanics of playing the instrument, the different scales and notes that are used, and the basics of reading music.

The art of listening

Since we learned by watching And listening, I have decided to watch and listen to my favorite violinist of all times, I often practice a long music videos to ensure that I’m not just practice on time, but I hit the Notes to a perfect pitch and speed.

Mastering the Nuances

While it was important to get to grips with the basics, it was also essential that I had a deep appreciation of the nuances that can make a performance truly outstanding. To build on this knowledge, I watched performances from world-class violinists live and studied their technique. I also found ways to work on improving my own skills by experimenting with different playing styles and techniques.

The physical aspect of Violin playing.

As a result of violin playing, I had adopted a different diet. Because Violin is a micro sport it is important to eat a diet full of protein, along with good sleep habits. Both of these allows you to grow muscle.

So sleep and eat well and don’t forget to hydrate!

The neurological aspects

It is common to believe that children are better able to learn because of the neurological differences between them and adults. However, recent studies have shown that even though children create new neural connections and new neurons. adults are able to make more connections with their existing neurons. Not just that, but it is now been proven that adult neurons do grow, adult neurons grow at a slower pace  because adults have more experiences than children and they use this experiences to learn new tasks.

Success

After a few years of dedicated practice, I should be  able to reach a level of proficiency that allowed me to perform with great skill and passion. Through my hard work and determination.
